However, I was still feeling ill so when we got to La Vina (aka Stay) I told him I couldn't stay because I was ill and still tired. Plus I didn't want to get anyone else sick. I told him he could just pick me up in the morning. BEEP BEEP BEEP, that was the sound of him backing up from what he told me. The minute I said no, I wasn't staying I was told some lie about how he wasn't going to take me to Carrington because the players wouldn't be there. Funny, he said they were 8 hours ago. However, he did say maybe next week. Ok, I didn't think too much of it, but at the time I should have seen what was coming coming.

Now, I don't think of myself as an idiot mostly because I believe I am not. Do I act like an idiot at times ... sure, everybody does. I actually have a Bachelor's Degree in History and I am halfway done with my Master's Degree in European History, plus I need 2 more credits for my Associate's Degree in Information Management. I speak German, not that great, but I can speak it. I also know some Portuguese and Italian. So what do I have in common with a waiter and the World's Best Football? Pretty much nothing, but the love of the game.

Joey Barton still hoping to turn his life around
But today troubled Toon star Joey Barton tells the Chronicle of his hopes for the future and how he is trying to turn his life around.
The shamed Newcastle United midfielder, who was sent off for a lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso in the defeat at Liverpool in May, was suspended following a heated row with manager Alan Shearer after the game.
Barton was given 200 hours’ community service last year plus a suspended jail stretch for punching Ousmane Dabo at a training ground when they were both at Manchester City.
He was also jailed for six months for another attack, outside McDonald’s in Liverpool, which was caught on CCTV. But he walked free after 74 days.
Barton was banned by the FA for 12 matches – six of which were suspended – and fined £25,000 after admitting a violent conduct charge in relation to the Dabo incident.
And earlier this year he was fined £750 for driving without a licence, as well as £60 costs, after the offence which took place in September last year.
The 26-year-old, who lives in a penthouse in Newcastle city centre, said: “I have tried to make the best of my time off the pitch. It has been well documented that I have had problems with alcohol and I’m trying to turn a corner now.
“All I am looking forward to is going back, I just hope I’m welcome.
“My intention is to stay with the club so I am concentrating on getting back into peak fitness.”
But Barton said he was keen to get back on the pitch and play for the Toon.
He said: “Everything with the club is a little bit up in the air. It is not good times being relegated.
“I don’t know what is going to happen with the club or with the manager situation.
“It’s really frustrating this has happened, especially as I only played about six or seven games.
“I’m just looking forward to going back and my intention is to stay at the club and help Newcastle back into the Premier League.
“If Alan Shearer takes the job and if he doesn’t want me then my hands are tied. All I can do is try and get as fit as possible, but I have got to prepare for all eventualities.”
Recently Barton has been involved in a project called Second Chance, which aims to give recovering drug addicts and people suffering from homelessness something to focus on to keep them off drugs.
Teams from Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Northumbria and Glasgow, came head to head in a bid to use the power of sport by bringing people together and paving the way for healthier lifestyles and new opportunities.
The football star has been giving tips on crosses and shooting to an 11-a-side team.
He said: “I think sport can help keep people off the streets.
“When I was a kid if we had a football to play with, the chances of getting into mischief were greatly lessened.
“I have been really enjoying it as it is keeping my feet on the ground. Due to my past problems I can relate to some of the lads who have similar issues, if not worse.”
Twenty-two-year-old Dennis Baldwin, who lives in Bensham, Gateshead, said he had thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Barton.
The former brick layer, who was playing for Gateshead, said: “It has been a brilliant day, we got to the semi-finals and sadly got knocked out two-nil.
“It is disappointing that we didn’t win but Joey was a great laugh.
“He really helped all the lads improve their game and showed us how it should be done.”
Hugh Thompson, who organised the match, added: “It was a great day and fantastic that Joey came to support the lads.
“A lot of them have had a hard time in the past but they all came together to take part.
“It gives people the chance to play sport as well as hopefully gain some qualifications if that interests them.”

Barton injured in City Defeat
Toon striker Owen is set to be out for around eight weeks after sustaining an ankle injury, while midfielder Barton will be sidelined for up to 10 weeks with a broken foot.
Manager Joe Kinnear said: "I'm absolutely devastated. It doesn't leave us with many options and time is running out in the transfer window."
It means more bad news for the Toon Army after another disappointing display at Eastlands which saw United lose 2-1.
Shaun Wright-Phillips got the first goal before former Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy returned to haunt his former club with the winning strike.
A late consolation from Andy Carroll sparked some hopes among the fans, but it was not meant to be.

Kinnear Looking To Joey Barton To Provide Newcastle United Boost
Now though, Toon manager Joe Kinnear is hoping that the midfielder's return, who, despite his well-document 'issues', has bucket loads of talent, can help provide an additional boost to his squad after the signing of Peter Lovenkrands today, and the news that Obafemi Martins will soon be back in action.
"Having Joey back is a big bonus," Kinnear told the club's official website.
"I thought it was important to give him a run-out at Blackburn and then again in Tuesday's game with Carlisle. He has a great desire to win and is a box-to-box midfielder who will give his all.
"He could be a very important player for us between now and the end of the season."
Barton provides box-to-box enthusiasm and carries a goal-threat as well as possessing a crunching tackle. Already short on numbers in midfield, Barton's return will must come as a relief, of nothing else, to Kinnear, who saw midfielder Danny Guthrie limp out of training with a hamstring injury yesterday.

Joey Barton to up fitness in Carlisle friendly
United will also look at Danish winger Peter Lovenkrands in the game and a host of young trial players. But boss Joe Kinnear will be keen for Barton to get 90 minutes under his belt.
The Toon midfielder made a shock return against Blackburn 11 days ahead of schedule after recovering from a knee injury.
However, Barton got through his cameo role at Ewood Park unscathed despite being involved in an altercation with team-mate Jose Enrique. He rowed with the full-back for not tracking back for Blackburn’s third goal.
Kinnear told the Chronicle: “I didn’t have to put Joey on, but we’re desperate to have him back in the middle of the park and desperate to get him super fit.
“I wanted to get something like 15 to 20 minutes into him.
“I’m always thinking about the next game.
“Otherwise, it would be a case of putting a lot of young kids in and leaving players out.”
Kinnear will be without Nicky Butt after the player’s red card at Ewood Park, meaning he will be even keener to field Barton at his old club Manchester City in nine days.
Toon fans will also be keen to see Jonas Gutierrez back in the starting line-up at Eastlands after chanting: “We want Spiderman” for long periods until his late appearance.
Kinnear said afterwards his limited pitch time was down to a hamstring injury picked up in training during the week.
But he fears that other than Barton and Gutierrez, there may not be any more players back from the treatment room for the trip to Man City.
Kinnear said: “The fans came down in their thousands and will have gone back bitterly disappointed.
“Jonas hadn’t trained all week. I wasn’t sure if I was going to play him but decisions have to be made.
“We’ve got too many players who are half-fit and on their way back.’’

Pompey ready to tempt Magpies with Barton bid
Adams, who has given up hope of signing Middlesbrough midfielder Gary O’Neil after the Teessiders turned down a £4.5m bid, is ready to make a formal offer for Barton’s services this week.
The Portsmouth boss, who is desperate to bolster his squad after the sale of both Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe, has identified Barton as his preferred alternative to O’Neil.
And with Bolton having dropped out of the race for the England international yesterday, the path would appear to be clear for Adams to entice Barton to Fratton Park.
While Magpies manager Joe Kinnear has consistently claimed the 26-year-old, pictured right, will not be leaving St James’ Park this month, Mike Ashley is understood to be keen to move Barton on.
The Newcastle owner made an unsuccessful attempt to reduce Barton’s wages while the controversial midfielder was serving a six-month sentence for assault, and attempted to sell him to both Por tsmouth and Bolton on August transfer-deadline day.
Those attempts infuriated Kevin Keegan, and hastened the former manager’s departure from St James’, but Ashley remains keen to remove Barton’s name from Newcastle’s books.
Adams has been monitoring the situation closely, and is hoping his personal relationship with the former Manchester City playmaker will help entice him to Fratton Park.
Adams founded the Sporting Chance Clinic, a facility Barton used extensively as he attempted to address his muchpublicised alcohol problems last year, and helped to mentor the Liverpudlian following his spell at a rehabilitation centre in Hampshire.
Having accepted that his interest in O’Neil is now at an end, the Pompey boss is expected to use the £4.5m he had earmarked for the Middlesbrough midfielder to persuade Newcastle to sell Barton this month.
His prospects improved markedly yesterday when Megson called time on his pursuit of Barton, who could resume training following a knee injury at the end of the week.
The Bolton boss had a £2m bid rejected at the end of last week, and will not be improving his offer for a player who comes with baggage attached.
“We move on,” said Megson.
“Joey is a good player and a former England international, but he has certainly had his problems. There is an amount we would go to and that’s it. We would not go any further.”
Kinnear is keen to hold on to Barton, as he has repeatedly claimed that Newcastle’s midfield options are limited as it is.
Bolton Bid for Barton Rejected by Newcastle
Bolton had bid £2 million for the player, who is currently sidelined with a bad knee injury. However, Wanderers' need for players is becoming urgent.
Able to name only three outfield players as subsitutes for Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Arsenal, injuries and suspensions have taken a terrible toll on Megson's squad, with Gavin McCann breaking a toe at the Emirates, and Johan Elmander (hamstring) and Nicky Hunt (foot) also being treated for injuries.
Barton reportedly favours a return to the North-West of England, but a £6 million fee and £50,000 a week in wages are major stumbling blocks for the Trotters.
"We move on. Joey is a good player and a former England international," Megson confirmed earlier."But he has certainly had his problems. There is an amount we would go to and that's it. We would not go any further.
"It's not particularly brave to want to sign him because he is a good player. However, he has got baggage and I hope, for his sake, he has got over that."But purely in footballing terms I would be delighted to have him and hope everything else is a distant memory. So, that's it finished now."

Joey Barton to Pompey?
Pompey manager Tony Adams has checked on the midfielder’s availability.
Barton, 26, returns next week after two months out with a knee injury and Toon boss Joe Kinnear will plead with him to stay.
But Adams knows Barton well following time spent at his Sporting Chance clinic and understands how to deal with the demons which have threatened to destroy the Scouser’s career.
Portsmouth need new midfielders with Papa Bouba Diop crocked for three months and Lassana Diarra sold to Real Madrid.
Barton’s agent Willie McKay said: “It doesn’t surprise me if there is interest because Joey is a great midfielder.”

Joey Barton ready for Newcastle return
Midfield dynamo Barton is due to see a specialist about his broken leg today and hopes to get the all clear to resume training by the end of the week.
Barton's influence has been sorely missed as Joe Kinnear's side tumble back into the drop zone - and the player is desperate to contribute after a nightmare campaign.
Kinnear needs Barton back in his side as the survival fight begins in earnest - and with cash tight as he looks around for reinforcements.
